It’s important to understand what’s going into your body. With so many choices and options out there, it can be a minefield getting to grips with what might work best for you. MCTs have been around for many years, but it’s only recently that their potential benefits have started to be studied and more clearly understood.
Having recently gained popularity as a supplement amongst the health and fitness conscious, MCT powder, which is high medium-chain triglyceride, offers many health benefits. Triglycerides are used by the body to burn energy or are stored as body fat. They can be extracted from coconut oil, palm oil and dairy products, the “healthy” fat molecules in MCT power are “clean” making them more digestible and easier for the body to process. This results in some interesting benefits; all in all it’s pretty awesome stuff!
It has the potential to help manage weight
Due to the fact they are processed more easily by the body, MCT’s become the go-to energy source, as a result, they aren’t stored as body fat. MCT can also help you to feel fuller thanks to the release of hormones, so you aren’t tempted to eat more to fill up!
They’re also a friend to any one on a ketogenic diet. They can help you to stay in “ketosis” so you can keep burning those fats.
Lastly on the weight management front; we’ve all heard of good bacteria in our gut, MCTs help to create an optimal environment for the good bacteria to flourish.
It can help you to improve your focus
Your brain uses ketones and glucose as fuel, and since MCT’s consist of ketones, your essentially giving it a bumper supply of what it needs to help your concentration, focus and mental clarity. Some evidence suggests ketones are a much preferred source of fuel compared to glucose (and carbs) which gives many that extra sense of mindfulness.
It can help to boost your energy levels
A diet that includes MCTs gives your body a source of energy that’s more quickly available, as it travels more quickly through the body thanks to it being processed and absorbed more easily.
Could it help manage some medical conditions?
Linking back to the ketogenic diet, it is claimed conditions such as epilepsy, autism and Alzheimers disease, could be managed due to the alternative source of energy ketones offer the brain, allowing for improved function in some cases. More studies are needed to further understand the true impacts of MCTs in managing these conditions.
It’s good for your heart
There is some evidence to suggest inflammation is associated with heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Due to the fact that they can also support weight management, MCTs could then, as a result, reduce your risk factors for heart disease.
It could help you to manage your blood sugar
Again, in line with maintaining an overall healthy weight and good diet by using MCTs, they can in turn, impact the level of sugar in the blood. A reduction in the amount of fat stored in the body and an increase in fat burning will naturally mean that blood sugar levels are lower.
If it sounds like MCTs could be the perfect thing to add to your supplements, then MCT powder, is a great, no-nonsense way to take it. You can drop it into your smoothies, coffee or tea, or even sprinkle it on your cereal! But don’t forget there are daily consumption limits as with everything so be sure to stay within the recommended limits.
