Your health questions, answered by a real expert.
This week, we’ve partnered up with Dr Daniyal Baig to learn more about gut health. Dr Daniyal Baig is a Gastroenterologist.
What’s one simple thing people can do every day to feel healthier?
"Start your day with a glass of water—it’s incredibly simple yet often overlooked. Staying hydrated helps your body function optimally, boosts energy levels, and can even improve mood."
What’s a common health myth that you wish more people knew the truth about?
"One widespread myth is that carbs are inherently bad for you. The truth is, carbohydrates are essential fuel for our bodies, particularly for brain function. Rather than avoiding carbs entirely, focus on consuming healthier sources like whole grains, vegetables, and fruits."
If you could give just one piece of advice for living a balanced life, what would it be?
"Make small, manageable lifestyle choices consistently rather than drastic changes all at once. Balance comes from moderation—whether it’s diet, exercise, work, or rest. Regularly incorporating nutritious meals, gentle physical activity, and adequate sleep into your daily routine can transform your overall health."
What’s something about health and well-being that people tend to overcomplicate?
"Nutrition often gets unnecessarily complicated. People worry about intricate dietary trends and strict regimens when, in reality, eating a variety of balanced meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains is more sustainable and beneficial. Your gut, often referred to as your “second brain,” thrives on balanced nutrition, and there’s promising evidence around probiotics contributing positively to digestive health and overall well-being."
What’s a small change that can make a big difference in someone’s overall well-being?
"Incorporating probiotics through simple dietary adjustments—like adding yogurt, kefir, or fermented foods to meals—can have significant benefits. Probiotics support gut health, aid digestion, and can positively impact your immune system and mood, given the close communication between your gut and brain.
Additionally, it’s important for individuals following special diets such as vegetarian or vegan to be mindful of vitamin B12 levels, as low levels can lead to anaemia, significantly impacting energy and overall well-being. In these cases, and only if required, a vitamin B12 supplement may be recommended to maintain optimal health."
